Highlights from the CIARD CMTF face-to-face meeting in Addis

Posted by valeriap on April 3, 2009

The CIARD Content Management Task Force met in Addis Ababa from 25 to 27 March 2009 in order to achieve a consolidated work program (what, who, when) for the Task Force till the next plenary CIARD meeting and to discuss the CIARD Checklist and the CIARD Pathways.

The discussion on the Checklist was very productive and the TF was able to produce a revised version to submit to the Advocacy Task Force.

The main points on which the TF agreed were:

- The CMTF is not comfortable with the classification of the checklist points under the three As
(For some points, e.g. copyright, it is questionable whether they fall under availability or under accessibility. Also, do we speak about availability of full-text documents or availability or metadata? If full texts are available, metadata are a means to improve access… etc.)

- The CMTF proposes to remove the three As and to group availability and accessibility points together.

- The CMTF has concerns about applicability. From the CMTF point of view, most of the CMTF feels that we can only provide an infrastructure (metadata standards, tools, so that information can be re-used to evaluate its impact; applicability would reduce to re-packaging (defining metrics to measure the use of information and include them in metadata and workflows). As the CMTF, we would see applicability as measurement of impact and we could suggest pathways to measure the impact.

- In general, the CMTF feels the need for a glossary defining / clarifying certain terms used in the Checklist

The TF also identified specific deliverables for each of its ToRs and all one or more convenors took responsibility for each deliverable.

Many deliverables were expressed in the form of Pathways (see the draft Pathways identified so far on the CIARD website), some in the form of papers and a few in the form of websites/services.

A report of the meeting will be available soon.
